Beyond the Veil: Mystical States and the Neurospiritual Awakening of the Soul
What happens when we slip beyond the veil of ordinary consciousness?
It’s a question as old as mysticism itself, yet as current as the latest neuroscience. Across time, cultures, and cosmologies, humans have entered altered states—whether through dreams, deep meditation, illness, plant medicine, evocative music, or spontaneous moments of grace—and emerged with an unshakable sense that they touched something real, something more real than “reality” as we know it.
At the core of my neurospiritual lens is this bold idea: that such mystical states are not anomalies or escapist hallucinations, but portals. They offer access to deeper layers of the psyche and Soul—what Carl Jung might call the archetypal or transpersonal realms. And they hold the power to rewire our brains, rewrite our personal narratives, and renew our capacity to live with flow, meaning, and joy.
In this sense, mystical experience is not just a metaphysical luxury. It is a biological and spiritual technology for transformation.
The Non-Ordinary is Natural
From a neurobiological perspective, the human brain is wired for mystical experience. The default mode network (DMN)—often associated with ego, self-referencing, and habitual patterns—tends to quiet during peak states. Whether induced through deep meditation, breathwork, trauma, or ecstatic prayer, this deactivation allows new networks to light up, creating the conditions for awe, unity, and insight.

These states can manifest as:
- Timelessness and a distortion of spatial awareness
- A deep sense of interconnectedness or “oneness”
- Encounters with archetypes, ancestors, deities, or divine presence
- Emotional catharsis or inexplicable peace
- The sudden dissolving of the self
Importantly, these experiences often bypass the analytical mind, landing in the body and spirit as a felt knowing—a truth too big for words, but too important to ignore.
As I discuss in my book on the power of neurospirituality (OPEN: A NEUROSPIRITUAL EXPLORATION OF THE SELF-HEALING POWER OF YOUR BRAIN), these experiences help disrupt the deeply ingrained patterns of stress, anxiety, depression, addiction, and trauma (I use the acronym SADAT to refer to all these conditions). In terms of neuroplasticity, they weaken old synaptic pathways and open space for new ones—what we might call “neurospiritual rewiring.”

Mystical Experience as Soul Activation
When we use the language of soul, we’re stepping out of pathology and into possibility. Mystical states are more than “experiences”—they are initiations. They pull us beyond our ego narratives, beyond the illusions of separation, and into direct contact with a larger, often mysterious intelligence.
For some, this activation is a gentle dream that stirs, a walk in nature that shifts something deep within. For others, it comes through initiatory fire: a profound trauma, a critical medical diagnosis, a brush with death. Regardless of the doorway, what lies beyond is often the same: the reminder that we are more than we believed ourselves to be.
In the OPEN model, this is where transformation begins: you cannot reprogram your life without raising your consciousness. Mystical experience raises consciousness not as an intellectual event, but as a full-body reorientation to being.
The Plasticity of the Psyche
Neuroscience shows us that the brain is malleable—capable of creating new circuits and letting old ones atrophy. Mystical experiences catalyze this process in surprising ways. In fact, in his works such as The Holotropic Mind (1992) and Psychology of the Future (2000), Dr. Stan Grof consistently emphasizes that the revolutionary practice of Holotropic Breathwork which he developed can catalyze profound and enduring transformations.
Grof describes how sessions often lead to restructuring of personality, release of deep trauma, increased creativity, changes in values, and lasting spiritual insights. These shifts, he argues, can persist long after the session—reshaping people’s emotional states, relational patterns, and worldview. He also notes that such experience can help us come to terms with the fear of death, a powerful shift that is conducive to healing, positive personality transformation, and consciousness evolution. Additionally, research into psychedelic sessions also note lasting changes in mood, behavior, and belief systems after a single profound encounter.
But why?
Because the brain and soul both respond to emotional salience, and few things are more emotionally potent than a brush with the numinous. A single moment of profound unity or a vision of the sacred can restructure the architecture of your identity. It can deconstruct ego defenses built over decades and expose you to a more profound truth about who you really are.
In the language of OPEN, this is awakening your SPIRITUAL self—one of the three core aspects of identity (along with PRIMAL and RATIONAL). Most of us spend our lives dominated by the survival impulses of the PRIMAL self or the logic loops of the RATIONAL self. Mystical states temporarily disable those systems and allow the SPIRITUAL self—your source of higher meaning, purpose, and connection—to lead.
Integration: From Revelation to Ritual
But here’s the critical piece: Mystical states are not the transformation itself—they are catalysts.
The real work begins afterward. Without integration, even the most profound experience can fade into memory or become a confusing, isolating detour. That’s where neurospiritual practices—what OPEN refers to as rituals—come in.

Rituals are not empty habits. When properly chosen, they are intentional neuroplastic loops that reinforce the openness, clarity, or compassion accessed during mystical experiences. They anchor revelation into daily life.
Examples might include:
- Movement work or Breathwork to maintain the body as an ally
- Creating art, music, or symbolic expression
- Returning to nature or sacred space for regular attunement
The more a ritual aligns with your personality type as in the nine types of the Enneagram, or in the Big-5 traits profile (OPEN, CONSCIENTIOUSNESS, EXTRAVERSION, AGREABLENESS, AND NEUROTICISM), the more effective it becomes in sustaining transformation.
Facing the Shadow: The Other Side of Mystical Experience
Not all mystical states are blissful. Some are harrowing. They bring up suppressed memories, grief, terror, or the void. And yet, these too are sacred.
As I share in OPEN, many of my mystical experiences were often the darkest sessions—filled with confusion, nausea, or fear—that offered the most powerful teachings. These are not signs of failure but initiations into the shadow, the parts of us exiled from consciousness but aching for integration.
In the OPEN model, facing these aspects is essential to healing SADAT conditions. Through safe, sacred spaces (temenos) and with the guidance of community, these states can be metabolized into self-compassion, forgiveness, and an expanded sense of identity.
We Are Wired for Wonder
Mystical states are not a fringe curiosity. They are part of the natural human design—biologically, psychologically, and spiritually.
They remind us:
- That healing is possible, even from the deepest wounds
- That consciousness is more expansive than we ever imagined
- That the brain, like the Soul, is not static—it is evolving
- That meaning, connection, and beauty are not luxuries, but necessities
In a world that increasingly prizes speed, productivity, and control, mystical experience is radical. It invites surrender. It opens the door to mystery. And it teaches us to live in right relationship with ourselves, each other, and the more-than-human world.
Through the neurospiritual lens of OPEN, we come to see these experiences not as escapes, but as re-entry points to a more authentic life—a life where stress, trauma, and old stories no longer write our future, and where Soul finally gets to speak.
Come with an open heart. Leave with expanded vision. That’s not just an invitation. It’s a call to remember who you truly are—and to rewrite your life from that place.
