PODCAST—Exploring Past Lives Through Hypnosis: Illuminating Stories that Shape Your Soul

"In naming the soul’s patterns across time, and in bearing witness to their transformations through story and presence, we open the door to new possibilities for a deeper freedom."
Dr. Bonnie Bright and Dr. Christophe Morin with Hypnotherapist Jonathan Robinson

In this fascinating episode of Soul, Cosmos, and Consciousness™, we explore the symbolic and transformational terrain of Past Life Hypnosis with hypnotherapist Jonathan Robinson. Co-hosted by Dr. Christophe Morin and myself, Dr. Bonnie Bright, the dialogue reveals how the delicate threads of soul memory, when traced with care and consciousness, can lead us into deeper awareness of the patterns and narratives that continue to shape our current incarnation.

Through Jonathan’s experienced insights, we begin to understand how material arising in a hypnotic state—whether viewed as literal or metaphorical—can carry the weight of meaning and the potential for profound healing.

The Body as Archive: When the Psyche Stores Symbolic Memory

One of the most striking stories shared in this conversation involved a woman who had experienced repeated trauma around her physical appearance and struggled with extreme weight issues. During her session, she was guided back to a life where she had once been chosen for her beauty—but then was brutally punished for it. The vow she made in that lifetime to “never be beautiful again” had seemingly passed beyond the veil of death and embedded itself in her current body as a kind of protective somatic armor. Following the session, her weight began to drop rapidly—an embodied shift that seemed to be a direct result of a psychic release.

These narratives, though often dismissed in clinical settings, carry immense symbolic potency. As C. G. Jung (1964) observed, “The psyche—or soul—speaks in images,” and the images accessed in these sessions—whether traumatic or triumphant—offer the client not only insight but also the opportunity to decide how to be in relationship with themselves, their past experiences, or with others in their life. Whether or not the past life “happened” in a historical sense becomes secondary to what is learned, remembered, and reclaimed.

Jonathan’s approach, much like that of Dolores Cannon (1993), Michael Newton (1994, 2000), and Brian Weiss (1998), avoids the rigid tenets one often finds in religion. Instead, he invites us into the experience as a co-creation with the unconscious, offering gentle guidance that does not plant suggestions or predetermined outcomes, but rather fosters trust for the wisdom of the psyche to lead.

This aligns quite beautifully with the Symbolic, Somatic, and Shamanic aspects of soul-centered psychologies, including the practice of doing one’s own inner work to awaken to new truths and grow consciousness. These perspectives provide powerful portals to remembering the soul’s bigger story.

Patterns Across Lifetimes: Archetypes and Repetition

In many of the stories that Jonathan shares, echoes of the past often surface as personal soul memories that carry archetypal patterns which resonate across time. One client, for example, carried a birthmark over her heart and a visceral distrust of men. Through her session, she accessed a memory of being murdered in that exact spot by a male figure in a past life. The healing came not in proving the event, but in re-membering it into her awareness and releasing its grip on her current patterns of mistrust.

Throughout the episode, we touch on the distinctions between spiritual and religious frames for past lives, the intersections with quantum physics and consciousness research, and the essential role of integration after regression work.

Jonathan emphasizes the importance of tuning in to dream material, setting post-session intentions, and making space for transformation to take root through somatic, energetic, and ritual practices. He reminds us that healing doesn’t necessarily require belief in the literal past life—it requires willingness to explore the symbols that the soul offers up and to respond with courage and consciousness.

Towards Transcendence: Bridging Science, Spirit, and the Imaginal

For those who are steeped in Jungian, Transpersonal, and Archetypal traditions, these stories act as powerful reminders of what Jung called the transcendent function—the bridging force that arises when the conscious and unconscious engage in meaningful dialogue. In this space, new myths are born, and old ones can be dissolved or reimagined.

In naming the soul’s patterns across time, and in bearing witness to their transformations through story and presence, we open the door to new possibilities for a deeper freedom—not only from the past, but toward the becoming of a more coherent, integrated way of being more whole in the world, and more connected to soul.
